Before beginning any kind of program with the idea of losing fat you must understand how it is we lose those extra inches. How much you weigh is determined by how many calories you take in and how many you burn. Keep this is mind. If you are starting a program and it tells you that you don’t have to watch what you’re eating and that you can sit on the couch all day eating bon-bons there is a problem. There are tons of programs out there and many of them are actually more harmful than helpful so when you are considering one make sure that you look into any reviews that are available as well as the things they promise. You can never get anything for nothing.

That being said, there are three major types of fat loss programs. Knowing which isn’t necessarily essential to losing those extra pounds but it can help you figure out what is the better route for you as you try to improve your health.

Home programs these are the diets you attempt by yourself or with your circle mates. This includes the simple counting of calories coupled with those trips to the gym as well as any limitations or expectations you set for yourself and weights. Structured home programs are the kinds of programs most of us go to when we want to get serious. These programs are the kinds that tell you you can only eat certain foods for a certain amount of time. The Special K challenge is the perfect example of these kinds of diets, as is Slim Fast. Even Jenny Craig fits under this category, though she is on the far side of the spectrum. You can typically tell these kinds of diets apart from any other by the food that you buy. It is more catered to what’s in the package or the name it sports? Now, these diets are also the easiest to bash and abuse so be careful. Remember that even when you are watching what you put into your body you need a certain amount of variety to maintain health. This means if you’re on a diet plan that requires you to eat nothing but peanut butter and ketchup packets you’re probably going to suffer from loss of the vitamins you’re neglecting. Make sure that when you stick to one kind of food that that food offers what you need daily or has enough wiggle room for you to get in that iron and potassium.

Clinical programs are the hardcore of diet plans. This is when you go into a clinic and they measure you, take blood samples, and tell you what you can afford to cut and how quickly. Depending on your budget you may either stay in most clinics or they’ll send you off with a list of do’s and don’ts. Clinical programs usually come with expert help from therapists to trainers and are most popular among individuals who need to lose a lot for a particular reason (wedding, high school reunions, etc.).
